What does Araxa mean?
Araxa Edu was first established in Fethiye, a region in Turkey where the ancient city of Araxa once existed. Today, our company is headquartered in Eskişehir, a city located in the northwest of Turkey.
The name Araxa means "shrine with an altar" in Luwian and Carian languages. The name of this city is mentioned as Araththi in the Lycian inscriptions. While talking about the old Lycian union, Plinius writes that among the 36 towns and cities included in this union, Araxa was also included.
It is not known when the city was founded, and no note was found that would give any specific information in ancient histories. BC only. It fought with its neighbors, Boubon and Kibyra, in the 2000s.
There are no significant remains from the city that have survived to the present day. Only on the slopes of the hill, next to Evren (Ören) village, are traces of a castle made of rocks stacked on top of each other. In addition, a few rock tombs and Lycian-type sarcophagi attract attention in the area. In the Byzantine period, it was a bishopric centre.
