Environmental And Outdoor Education

Course DescriptionThis Erasmus+ Ka1 course is designed for educators, administrators, and professionals in school, youth, adult and higher education interested in incorporating outdoor learning and environmental education into their teaching practices. Through a combination of interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and guided excursions, participants will explore the principles and benefits of outdoor learning, gain practical skills for designing and implementing outdoor learning activities, and deepen their understanding of environmental sustainability and stewardship.

Over the course of five days, participants will engage in a variety of learning experiences that include guided nature walks, visits to local farms and protected areas, hands-on workshops on outdoor skills, and group discussions on curriculum development and the challenges and opportunities of incorporating outdoor learning into educational settings.

Participants will also have the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals, exchange ideas and best practices, and explore the beautiful natural environment of the region where the course is held. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate that recognizes their commitment to advancing the field of outdoor learning and environmental education.

Overall, this Erasmus+ Staff Training course offers a unique and immersive learning experience that combines theory and practice, personal growth and well-being, and environmental stewardship and conservation.

Methodologies Of The CourseThe “Environment and Outdoor Learning” course utilizes a variety of methodologies to engage participants in an immersive and interactive learning experience.

Experiential learning: Participants will have opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences such as guided nature walks, outdoor skills workshops, and visits to local farms and protected areas.

Collaborative learning: Participants will engage in group discussions, activities, and projects to exchange ideas and best practices, and to develop a network of like-minded professionals.

Reflection and self-assessment: Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their learning experiences, identify areas for growth and improvement, and develop action plans for implementing outdoor learning in their educational settings.

Multimedia presentations: Course materials include multimedia presentations, videos, and case studies to illustrate key concepts and principles related to outdoor learning and environmental education.

  • Welcome & Icebreaker

  • What is Outdoor Learning?
    Interactive presentation with group brainstorming on experiences with learning outside the classroom

  • Workshop: Build Your Outdoor Learning Toolkit
    Teams create posters listing materials, methods, and spaces available in their school/community

  • Sustainability & Eco-Practices in Education
    Hands-on station-based activity to explore recycling systems, upcycling, and green habits at school

Day 2
  • Tactile Biodiversity Exploration
    Touch-and-feel stations with leaves, bark, soil, seeds, and natural elements for sensory-based learning

  • Climate Change Role Play
    Participants take the roles of students, teachers, and natural elements to explore the environmental change impacts

  • Circle Discussion: Where Is Nature in My Subject?
    Guided sharing session to identify how each school subject can connect to outdoor themes

Day 3
  • Learning Station Lab
    Participants rotate through mini activities (e.g., nature scavenger hunts, weather journaling, seed planting) that can be done in schoolyards, balconies, or parks

  • Workshop: Design an Outdoor Activity for Any Space
    Teams design activities for very limited outdoor access (e.g., an urban school with no playground)

  • Gallery Walk & Feedback
    Teams present their activities. Others leave sticky notes with ideas, questions, and compliments

Day 4
  • Map & Navigation Challenge
    Learn basic orientation and map skills using an indoor “course” marked with clues and questions

  • Problem-Solving Task: Nature Obstacle Challenge
    In teams, solve imaginary nature-based challenges using logic, creativity, and simple materials (e.g., build a shelter with paper and tape, create a safe path for a nature walk)

  • Integrating Outdoor Learning into the Curriculum
    Group work to draft sample lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards

Day 5
  • Create Your Mini Project: ‘My School Outside’
    Participants individually or in pairs draft an implementation plan to apply outdoor learning at their school

  • Interactive Fair: Present Your Plan
    Short, informal presentations with peer feedback using colored cards

  • Course Reflection & Feedback Circle
    Share one takeaway and one action step

  • Certificate Ceremony

Course FeeThe course fee is 80 euros per participant per day.
